“A Playful Learning Pavilion” is an innovative educational project designed to address the growing challenges of urban school architecture in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Located in Uttara, the Little Wonder School is an early learning center specializing in inclusive education for children aged 2 to 8 years, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The project reimagines the conventional school typology by transforming the entire site into a playful learning environment where classrooms, playgrounds, and nature coexist.

The design responds to Dhaka’s critical shortage of open spaces and playfields by creating a pavilion-like learning environment that blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces. The existing structure and trees on the site were carefully preserved and integrated into the new design, reducing construction costs while promoting sustainable practices. The project follows the principles of Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle, using locally available materials such as bamboo, wood, metal, and bricks.

The central concept, “A Pavilion for Open Learning,” focuses on creating an interactive, nature-oriented environment for children, especially those with ASD. Flexible classrooms, removable doors, transition spaces, natural ventilation, diffused daylight, and playful spatial arrangements encourage exploration, creativity, and independent learning. The boundary wall was transformed into a blackboard-like canvas, allowing children to engage with their surroundings and making the entire school a learning tool.

Despite an initial estimated cost of 40 lakh BDT, the project was successfully completed within a low budget of 12 lakh BDT by retaining the existing structure, optimizing materials, and applying climate-responsive design strategies. Completed within only two months, the project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural intervention can create an inclusive, sustainable, and child-friendly educational environment within limited resources.

The project has gained recognition through international architectural platforms and publications. “Little Wonder School” has been published in ContextBD and Archello, highlighting its innovative approach toward inclusive education, sustainable construction, and human-centered learning environments. It has also received attention from architectural communities for demonstrating how small-scale interventions can create meaningful social impact through design.  Also published international journal like Architecture Masterprize.
