SHAMIYANA: A Fine-Dining Pavilion Celebrating Indian Cuisine

IDEOLOGY

Shamiyana Restaurant explores the dialogue between past and present, seamlessly blending Mughal and Bengali architectural heritage with contemporary hospitality design. A walk-through experience of Indro Saracenic. The concept draws inspiration from the traditional Indian shamiyana—historically a pavilion used for festive gatherings—and reinterprets it as a pavilion-like spatial canopy that defines the restaurant’s unique identity. Central to the design is the influence of the Indro Saracenic Architecture, whose picturesque qualities, ceremonial ambiance, and cultural resonance inform the restaurant’s spatial narrative. By referencing this scenic inspiration, the design seeks to evoke the grandeur and celebratory spirit of traditional gatherings while creating an immersive environment that engages all senses. Every space is like a wide-open window of heritage.

The interiors aim to create a narrative of “living history,” where every space conveys the essence of India’s classical architecture through arches, columns, decorative motifs, and patterns, while harmonizing with Bengal’s regional identity. This layered approach allows patrons to experience a journey through time, where historical elegance meets contemporary comfort. The pavilion-inspired ceilings, ceremonial corridors, and carefully curated visual elements collectively celebrate Indian culinary culture, crafting a dining experience that is both culturally immersive and experientially dynamic.

LAYOUT

Spread across two floors, the restaurant offers a casual, light dining experience on the lower level and a fine dining atmosphere upstairs. Flexible operable partitions allow the space to transform into either a unified hall or distinct zones, accommodating diverse dining arrangements and private events. Circulation is defined by grand corridors with vaulted ceilings, establishing a ceremonial entry sequence. Seating clusters and flow patterns prioritize comfort, visual

connectivity, and spatial engagement, while central and peripheral zones cater to both social gatherings and intimate dining experiences.

MATERIALS

A warm, tactile material palette is central to the design. Wood dominates furniture, partitions, and ceiling details, complemented by vinyl and laminate finishes for durability without compromising authenticity. Glass partitions create openness and visual connectivity, while discreet acoustic treatments address high-activity areas. Decorative elements, including classical furniture and a vintage gramophone, reinforce historical references and enhance the immersive dining experience.

COLOR & ELEMENTS

Colors reference Mughal-era aesthetics, with earthy, textured walls reminiscent of aged clay and deep, vibrant fabrics on ceilings reflecting the traditional shamiyana. Floral-patterned ceiling cloth integrates historical symbolism with contemporary lighting design. Wall paintings inspired by Bangladesh’s architectural heritage, alongside hand-painted frames, act as visual narratives connecting patrons to regional history. Layered lighting guides the eye, balancing functional needs with atmospheric richness.

APPEARANCE

Shamiyana Restaurant communicates authenticity,

grandeur, and cultural storytelling. Vaulted corridors, arches, and ornate ceiling treatments establish a classical yet approachable environment. Pavilion-inspired ceilings evoke openness and celebration, while seating and circulation maintain clarity and comfort. The design merges scenic classical elements with modern hospitality standards, resulting in a dining experience that is historically evocative, culturally immersive, and experientially dynamic.

CONCLUSION

Shamiyana Restaurant fuses history and modernity, transforming Mughal and Bengali architectural heritage into a contemporary dining experience. Inspired by the traditional shamiyana and the Indro Saracenic, the design celebrates cultural richness, spatial drama, and timeless elegance. Every detail—from pavilion-inspired ceilings to layered lighting—creates an immersive environment where tradition meets modern hospitality. The project is a celebration of Indian culinary and architectural heritage, offering guests a memorable journey through space, culture, and experience.
